Former White House lawyer Ty Cobb didn’t hold back when talking about Donald Trump recently.
In an interview with Margaret Brennan on CBS’ Face the Nation, Cobb called the idea of reelecting Trump “one of the biggest mistakes” America could make.
He joined a broad group of legal experts—from both parties—in criticizing the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey, which many believe Trump pushed for.
Cobb sees this indictment as payback for Comey’s investigation into Trump’s alleged ties to Russia during the 2016 election. To Cobb, Trump isn’t just trying to settle scores—he’s trying to rewrite history to fit his own story.
“The simple truth is that Trump wants to change the narrative,” Cobb said. “He doesn’t want the next generation to know that he incited a violent insurrection or that he refused to hand over power peacefully after losing an election.”
He went on to say, “America has to learn from its mistakes, and honestly, one of the biggest mistakes was reelecting President Trump.”

James Comey is accused of perjury related to a 2020 Senate hearing, during which he testified that he did not authorize a leak to The Wall Street Journal in October 2016. According to Comey, the leak was actually made by Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, who later informed him about it. However, the indictment alleges that Comey knew about and approved the leak beforehand, meaning he lied during the 2020 hearing.
Lawyers in the Eastern District of Virginia—speaking to Lindsey Halligan, Trump’s former insurance lawyer and the district’s newly appointed attorney—expressed doubts, saying they did not believe they had enough evidence to charge Comey, let alone secure a conviction. Despite this, the Department of Justice pursued the indictment, causing chaos in the department.
Ty Cobb, 75, who served as a White House lawyer during the Russiagate investigation and reported directly to Donald Trump, has since become a vocal critic of the President and his team. In May, Cobb even gained attention for dubbing Trump’s Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt “Creepy Karoline.”
Cobb believes the indictment is unlikely to hold up, especially given Trump’s public interference in the case. Just days before the indictment was announced, Trump demanded in a Truth Social post that Attorney General Pam Bondi indict Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and Senator Adam Schiff—figures closely tied to legal actions against Trump and the Trump Foundation.

“I think there’s a strong chance that, because of the completely unconstitutional and authoritarian way this was handled, the case could be thrown out well before it even reaches trial,” Cobb said.
Margaret Brennan responded, noting that was a bold statement coming from someone who once worked closely with the president.
Cobb didn’t hesitate: “I call it like I see it—balls and strikes.”
