On Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, host John Oliver ridiculed President Donald Trump for appointing Lindsey Halligan — an insurance attorney with no prosecutorial experience as interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Halligan, who was appointed by Trump last week, previously worked on Trump’s legal defense in the classified documents case and was reportedly chosen after her predecessor, Erik S. Siebert, declined to bring charges against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
“It does make sense,” Oliver joked. “When you bring a case against the former director of the FBI, you definitely want it to be the maiden voyage of an insurance lawyer.”
He continued, poking fun at Halligan’s lack of relevant experience: “But I will say, what she lacks in prosecutorial experience, she more than makes up for in random insurance facts and a s–tload of under-eye concealer. And it is fine for me to say that because, a) one of the women on my staff wrote that joke—I’m assuming—and b) it’s OK to make fun of a woman’s appearance again. That is why I voted for him.”
Behind the sarcasm, Oliver raised serious concerns about Trump’s motivations, suggesting that Comey’s legal team might argue the prosecution is politically motivated. “Not only did Trump publicly call for Comey’s prosecution, he’s been unable to shut the f— up about it since the indictment,” Oliver said.
He pointed to a Truth Social post from Trump that appeared to be a direct message to Attorney General Pam Bondi. “It’s just embarrassing to post,” Oliver remarked. “Pam, this is killing our reputation. Sounds less like a president and more like a head cheerleader texting a girl on the squad who just got bangs. What are you doing, Pam? We don’t do bangs.”
Oliver concluded by warning that the real goal behind charging Comey may not be a conviction, but intimidation.
“The whole point may be to show that anyone who opposes Trump will pay a price,” he said. “He’s inverting the criminal justice process—starting not with a crime, but with a target. It’s bewildering, it’s horrifying, and honestly, a little hard to sum up in words.”
