Internet users are speculating whether President Donald Trump needed to grab his wife’s hand to maintain his “balance” while walking down the stairs.
The awkward moment unfolded Friday while Trump, 80, accompanied by his wife, Melania Trump, 56, whose marriage is at its lowest point due to a ‘disturbing truth’, was walking down red-carpeted stairs alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Madame Peng.
Video footage broadcast on television stations shows the moment President Trump seemingly grabbed Melania’s hand as the nation’s first couple walked down the red-carpeted stairs.
Before bracing to walk down the stairs after seemingly stopping to chat, the president immediately reached with his left for his wife’s right hand, appearing to grip onto her tightly while descending the steps.

Some internet users who viewed the clip wondered whether the president, who has been subject to a slew of speculation around his age-related health decline, grabbed her hand to maintain his balance.
“LMFAO – Trump finally went to hold Melania’s hand, and the struggle was caught on camera,” one X user wrote, attaching the viral clip.
One user replied, “Lol I think he’s using her to keep his balance.” Another similarly added, “He needs her for balance.” Another user wrote, “I think she is helping him down the stairs otherwise he would fall.”
Another ramped up the rhetoric, writing, “Old man needed help getting down those steps.”
Another noted that the setting could pose unique challenges for the elderly or physically impaired. The user wrote, “Stairs and no railings. He needed lots of help.”
Some other users, however, questioned whether Trump grabbed her hand for entirely different reasons.
“Xi was holding his wife’s hand so of course he couldn’t let him outshine him..,” one X user speculated.
Several also alleged that Melania appeared to want to pull away.
“She was trying to do the breakaway so badly,” one user speculated. Another added, “Like a ‘subtle’ tug of war lol.”
Xi wrapped up his rare three-day state visit to Washington on Friday by gracing the National Archives. Before the final event, Xi said that he plans to meet with Trump at least two more times before the end of the year, at which point their trade truce, which they announced upon arrival would be extended, will expire.
While the leaders of the two leading global economies made a concerted effort to paint their relationship as strong, no breakthroughs on top issues such as trade, security or artificial intelligence were publicly announced. That said, Trump claims the pair discussed pressing matters such as the Iran war during Xi’s visit, which critics described as flashy and hollow.
The lack of tangible progress came as a shock to some trade analysts, as the newly extended trade truce deadline approaches.
