Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) announced this week that his discharge petition to force a House vote on releasing the federal investigation files related to Jeffrey Epstein has likely reached the critical threshold of 218 signatures. This marks a major step toward compelling congressional action, despite resistance from GOP leadership.
The final signature reportedly came from the newly elected representative from Arizona’s recent special election, who pledged support shortly after taking office. Once a discharge petition hits 218 signatures, the House is required to hold a floor vote, bypassing the usual committee process.
Massie has positioned the move as a direct appeal for transparency and accountability. He warned that any attempt by party leaders or Speaker Mike Johnson to block the vote would be seen by the public as part of a coverup.
“The American people deserve to know the truth,” Massie said. He added that the release of these documents could finally provide long-sought answers about Epstein’s network, alleged crimes, and the extent of any government knowledge or involvement.
Senator Rand Paul has publicly backed Massie’s effort and said that leadership interference would only increase public scrutiny. “If leadership tries to bury this, they will be overwhelmed by public pressure. People are tired of the secrecy,” Paul stated.
The Epstein files have remained a source of public controversy since Epstein’s 2019 death in federal custody while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. While some documents have come to light through lawsuits and journalism, many aspects of the federal investigation are still sealed.
If the vote succeeds, it could lead to the release of names, communications, and key documents linked to Epstein’s criminal operation. These records may contain details involving high-profile individuals in politics, finance, and law enforcement.
The official confirmation of the 218 signatures is expected soon. If verified, it will set the stage for a long-anticipated and potentially historic House vote.
